Towards sustainability indicators for museums in Australia

27 January 2010This report looks at environmental, societal, cultural and economic sustainability issues of collecting organisations.

A set of pilot sustainability indicators is proposed, based on consultations with the directors and CEOs of some major South Australian collecting institutions, (including the Art Gallery of South Australia, the Botanic Gardens of Adelaide, Carrick Hill, the History Trust of South Australia, the South Australian Museum, the State Library of South Australia and the University of Adelaide) as well as ArtLab Australia and the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

This study provides a general overview of sustainability and reporting practices in Australian collecting organisations. The final report discusses the role of the museum in a sustainable community when considered against the ‘four pillars’ of sustainability - environment, society, culture and economy - and proposes a pilot model of 12 suggested core indicators.

The author and publisher encourage people working in archives, galleries, libraries and museums to consider and adapt the indicators for their own needs.
